Ankle Sprain

Ankle sprain: when you roll or sprain your ankle, not only does it hurt at the time, but it can easily set up a chain of events that results in knee pain, hip pain, lower back pain, and then the other leg can start hurting too!  Sometimes this happens over a period of weeks after the initial injury, just when you think your ankle is getting better your knee goes. And so on and so on.

This happens because so much more than the ankle is injured. In order to cause injury to the ankle and its ligaments, a lot of force goes through the whole lower leg and into the back, affecting the alignment of the knee, muscular strains up through the leg, and often small displacement in the joints at the base of the pelvis and lower back. When this happens, the “good” leg starts overworking and can end up with fatigue strains as well. This is why we check all of these structures after an ankle strain, and often a lot more.

A ‘wonky” lower back causes the rest of the back to compensate, and an ankle strain can even result in neck pain and headaches. All of these joints and muscles need to be checked and realigned so that further issues like poor joint tracking and so on don’t become problematic down the line.
